Early Holmes / Lindsay Connections

Updated: Jul 6, 2023

Today I found a reference from 1509 to Robert Lyndesay and Elizabeth Holmys residing in Dreghorn Cuningham and Caprington in Ayrshire. Lindsay / Holmes connections always peek my interest as both the Holmes and Lindsay DNA projects show a large number of Holmes and Lindsay men share a common ancestor. This 1509 reference is the earliest I have yet found.

The 1612 testament of Adam Galt includes a reference to Agnes Holm spouse to Archibald Lindsay in Crevoch [or Crivoch], which is located about 5 miles NE of Dreghorn. An Archibald Lindsay (possibly the same) appears in the 1628 testament of George Findlay of Greinside. Kilmarnock (son of George Finlay d.1621 and Margaret Holmes d.1616). A little more research turned up a Nininan Holmes in Crewoych-Lindsay [Crivoch-Lindsay] who was witness to a sasine in 1571.

John Lindsay, cooper married at Glasgow 7 Apr 1652, Margaret Holmes, daughter of John Holmes, merchant burgess of Glasgow.

Thomas Lyndsay younger appears as a debtor in the 1603 testament of Robert Holmes of Ganeleith, Kilmarnock

John Lyndsay, merchant burgess of Irvine is listed as a debtor in the 1608 testament of Ninian Holmes of Irvine.

Sources and transcripts for the references above can be found in the Holmes of Scotland doument on this site.
